Simple Self Care for Spinal Health

Disc herniation is usually the result of muscular imbalances (when one muscle group is stronger than its opposing muscle group which compromises posture) and tension which leads to irritation of the spine placing pressure on both spinal discs and joints.

Common warning signs of disc herniation & impinged nerve roots include:

  • Constant pain
  • Numbness or tingling down the limbs
  • Shooting pain in the lower back
  • Pins and needles sensation

Fortunately, bulging, slipped and herniated discs can be both reversed and prevented with corrective care such as Myotherapy treatment and self care education. If you have been diagnosed with a bulging, slipped or herniated disc, here are 5 things that may be able to help you recover well and regain full mobility, pain free.

  • Specific Exercises

Seeing an exercise physiologist can help you better understand how you can specifically reverse the postural imbalances that lead and contribute to such injuries.

  • Corrective Myotherapy treatment

While surgery can produce positive results in certain cases, it often requires a longer recovery process in itself than the time it would to correct the cause of the condition. Given the wide range of risks involved, surgery is a resort most people wish to avoid. Choosing more corrective types of treatment, such as Myotherapy is a fantastic way to prevent the need for costly surgery in many cases.

Advanced myotherapy has a natural and holistic approach to therapy, addressing the original (habitual/lifestyle) causes that lead to such musculo-skeletal conditions. The integrity and alignment of the spine is dependent upon the balance and wellness of the muscular system which is treated by Myotherapists.

Self care exercises are a great way to compliment treatments and further manage disc bulges or herniations. Some examples of these exercises are:

  • Swimming

Swimming is one of the most effective exercises to do for any sort of muscle or joint imbalances as it is done with no gravity and therefore very little stress on your back due to it being a non-weight bearing activity. Balancing of your body on the water will also help strengthen core muscles improving the muscular imbalance associated with disc herniation.

“I came to Advanced Myotherapy with a bulging disc and they not only treated me, but taught me self care, which is now a part of my life.” Nectarios Kaos

“I had doctors telling me I needed surgery, now they are scratching their heads after seeing my follow up scan only months later. NO more herniated disc!” – Grant Smith

  • Using a wheat bag

Another incredibly effective self care method of treating muscle imbalances is by applying heat (wheat bag) to the area. Heat will assist in reducing pain by bringing blood to the area which will encourage tight muscles to loosen and take the pressure off the discs.

  • Walking

Walking is also a great activity for your spine as the movement of your legs encourages gentle movement of your pelvis and spine. This then helps to reduce stiffness due to the low impact nature and increased blood flow. Also being in an upright position will help to reduce the loads and forces on your discs therefore encouraging quicker healing and decreasing pain.

At Advanced Myotherapy, in Carlton, we take on a non surgical approach, addressing the problem and the cause. If being recommended for surgery, its always best to seek a second opinion.

Surgery is invasive and will often result in further pain and long term restrictions. In most cases, disc problems are preventable and reversable with correct the treatment, advice and care. Below are a few examples from Advanced Myotherapy clients of what is possible with the right treatment care.
