After dealing with a chronic inflammatory condition for 6 years, it was the use of Infrared Sauna that finally saw the end of a long painful health battle!

That was after introducing it into my self care in 2020. Used with cold showers, Infrared Sauna can be combined for Contrast Therapy, otherwise known as Hot Cold or Cryotherapy & Thermotherapy.

Hot-cold therapy, also known as contrast therapy, is a therapeutic technique that involves alternating between heat and cold applications to treat a variety of physical conditionsโ€”mainly related to pain, inflammation, and muscle recovery.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Heat Therapy (Thermotherapy)

Purpose:

  • Increases blood flow
  • Relaxes tight muscles
  • Soothes aches
  • Improves tissue elasticity

Common Methods:

  • Heating pads
  • Warm baths
  • Hot towels
  • Infrared therapy

Used for:

  • Chronic pain (like arthritis)
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Stress-related tension

โ„๏ธ Cold Therapy (Cryotherapy)

Purpose:

  • Reduces blood flow to decrease inflammation and swelling
  • Numbs pain
  • Reduces muscle spasms

Common Methods:

  • Ice packs
  • Cold baths
  • Gel packs
  • Ice massage

Used for:

  • Acute injuries (sprains, bruises)
  • Inflammation
  • Swelling
  • Post-workout recovery

Infrared Sauna Therapeutic Benefits

Infrared saunas have gained popularity as an alternative to traditional steam saunas, offering a different kind of heat therapy. Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air around you, infrared saunas use infrared light to penetrate your skin and warm your body directly. Here are the key benefits of infrared saunas, based on available research and anecdotal evidence:

๐Ÿ”ฅ 1. Detoxification

  • Infrared saunas can promote sweating at lower temperatures, helping eliminate toxins such as heavy metals, BPA, and environmental pollutants through the skin.

โค๏ธ 2. Improved Circulation and Cardiovascular Health

  • The heat causes blood vessels to dilate, increasing blood flow.
  • Regular sessions may mimic the effects of moderate exercise and can help reduce blood pressure.

๐Ÿ’ช 3. Muscle Recovery and Pain Relief

  • Infrared therapy may relieve joint and muscle pain by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation.
  • Often used by athletes for recovery and by individuals with chronic pain conditions like arthritis or fibromyalgia.

๐Ÿง˜ 4. Stress Reduction and Relaxation

  • Infrared heat promotes relaxation by lowering cortisol (stress hormone) levels.
  • Many users report a calming, meditative effect during sessions.

๐ŸŒ™ 5. Better Sleep

  • Relaxation and reduced pain can contribute to better sleep quality.
  • Some studies suggest that regular infrared sauna use improves sleep patterns, especially in people with insomnia or chronic stress.

๐ŸŒฟ 6. Skin Health

  • Infrared heat can improve circulation to the skin, potentially reducing wrinkles, acne, and other blemishes.
  • Sweating helps unclog pores and improve tone and clarity.

โš–๏ธ 7. Weight Loss Support

  • While not a substitute for diet and exercise, infrared sauna sessions can slightly boost calorie burning due to increased heart rate and sweating (some claim 200โ€“600 calories per session).

๐Ÿฆ  8. Immune System Boost

  • Raising your bodyโ€™s core temperature mimics a fever, which can help the body fight infections more effectively.

โš ๏ธ Considerations and Safety

  • Hydration is criticalโ€”infrared saunas cause heavy sweating.
  • People with certain health conditions (e.g. cardiovascular issues, pregnancy) should consult a doctor.
  • Limit sessions to around 30 minutes, 3โ€“4 times per week, unless otherwise advised.
